ISSUE: Help End the Seal Slaughter in Canada

Every year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are killed, bludgeoned using clubs, their skins then torn off their bodies, often while they are still alive, and then left to rot on the ice.
Many of these seals are less than 3 weeks old.
Last year, over 300,000 seals were  killed, many of them were less than 3 weeks old, they had never eaten solid food, or even had their first swim. Of course, they were easy targets.
The seal slaughter is the largest slaughter of marine animals in the world.
Despite bans on fur by both the US and the EU, the Canadian government still allows (and funds) this barbaric practice.

WARNING: Very Graphic Content.

However, there is hope. After Russia, Canada's biggest fur-trading partner, banned seal fur imports, there is no longer a market for the cruel product. A liberal Canadian Senator Mac Harb has introduced a bill in Canada that would end the seal slaughter. The bill, however, has yet to be passed, but the debate is still ongoing.

You can help by singing a letter to Canadian politicians showing your support for Senator Mac Harb's bill here:

"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do." ~Edward Everet Hale~

If you can wrap your head around that :P
People, we need more members if anything we do is going to work
Remember, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
We cannot be silent, it is even more crucial to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Want to be a member of Watu.Wanyama?

Watu. Wanyama.
People. Animals.
We're not that different.

If you believe this, and want to make a different for all the lonely, sad, abused and mistreated animals in Kenya, please join this new animal rights activists group.
We're currently looking for new members to be meeting and discussing ways of raising awareness, raising money and generally doing everything we can to help improve the lives of animals in Kenya, which will hopefully be in conjunction with other organizations such as the KSPCA, KWS and the Donkey Sanctuary.

Some of the projects I was thinking of pursuing are:
1. Raising money to improve standards at the KSPCA
2. Educating animal owners on the right/wrong way to train and treat animals and pets
3. Encourage people to adopt pets
4. Helping sick animals get veterinary care
5. Organising volunteering at the Donkey Sanctuary and the KSPCA as well as visits
6. STOP bullfighting in Kakamega
7. Work with the KWS and raise money for the fight against poaching
8. Promote sustainable tourism in game parks and marines
9. Anti-fur and "exotic" skins campaigns
10. Anti-animal testing campaigns
11. Boycotts
12.Interviews with vets and officials which will hopefully lead to an informative video/PSA
13.Fundraising projects:

  • T-shirts
  • Calendars
  • Funny slogans
  • Photography
  • Music (concerts) and other performances
  • Films and film-making

If you are interested in helping in any of these, or if you have even better ideas (which i'm sure you do) please give me a call or send an e-mail.

I can't do anything without members, so please email me on watu.wanyama@gmail.com or call 0705123067 for more information.

We, as humans, have done so much wrong to our world and our wildlife, it's time to help put things right.

Bull Fighting in Kakamega

Watu wanyama, I can scarcely believe my eyes.
Yes. The bull fighting scene has reached Kenya.
It seems hard to believe that in this so-called civilised age, a most vicious and cruel spectacle of blood continues to flourish, bull fighting should have been banned long ago.It seems hard to believe that in this so-called civilised age, a most vicious and cruel spectacle of blood continues to flourish- unlike "traditional" bull figthing such as in Spain where it is a "man vs. beast" ideaology, in western Kenya it is "beast vs. beast"
Bull fighting was described on KenyaBuzz.com as
"a sight like no other. it brings the entertainment to the local and tourists as trained bulls are encouraged to engage in an exciting combat (lock horns literally). This traditional spectacle is offered from the "Idakho" and "Isukha" Luhya tribes highlighting there culture as loud allulations from the crowd of opposing villages who are dressed in cultural attires goes on. alongside this bull fights are the Isukuti dance and songs, blowing whistles and horns to cheer up the participating Bull. fights last about 30 minutes."

How callous of them to describe the chanting as "to cheer up" the bull. Drving an animal to deranged anger and then thrusting it into a ring to fight to the death for absuolutely no reason is not exciting or entertaining. It is barbaric, it is inhumane. It needs to be stopped.

So, how will we stop it? By exposing the facts.
Contrary to popular belief, bulls are not naturally agressive animals. This suggests that before the fight, something was dont to the bulls to make them so angry- and certainly not something pleasant. Having not witnessed the bull fighting in Kakamega myself, I cannot be too sure as to what this is, but drawing from my knowledge of general bullfighting here are some things that are usually done to bulls to get them heated up for the fight:
"The bull has wet newspapers stuffed into his ears; vaseline is rubbed into his eyes to blur his vision; cotton is stuffed up his nostrils to cut off his respiration and a needle is stuck into his genitals"
It seems hard to believe that bulls are inncoent, but they are, inncoent and confused when they are thrust into a ring with rallying mobs that do nothing but confuse them further.
We cannot let this most cruel form of "entertanment" continue. We must do what we can to stop it.

Karibu-Welcome

My first post. This.feels.awesome.
I just want to welcome everyone who is on this blog-karibuni yote. If you are reading this, it probably means we are of like mind- we love animals and want to be the voice of change that is so often-and when it comes to animals usually completely- ignored.
Here in Kenya we face so many problems that few take the time to stop to think about the lowly animals in our midst, I mean, when there is vast famine, corruption in government, drought, flooding, terrorism, the war in Somalia, HIV/AIDS -the lengthy list of Kenyas problems often makes something like animal welfare seem-insignificant? I mean just take a visit to KSPCA and the terrible conditions will be a testament to the fact that there is just not enough support for animal welfare.
So, here I am, an anonymous blogger. Will I really change this fact? Will I make a difference for the thousands of animals suffering in our  borders, for the elephants being poached, the donkeys being whipped, the dogs being abused or the monkeys being shot? Who knows?
All I can do, therefore, is try. And rely on you, my fellow animal lovers, because together, we can bring to light so many issues that lie in the dark- we can magnify the screams of suffering from animals and force the people to hear them. WE ARE WATU WANYAMA.

Upendo-Love,
SmileAloud
